New year, new Too Pure Singles Club – twelve 7″s in a number of colours hitting the hall doormat throughout the year. With the advent of mp3s you don’t even need to play them as you’re emailed virtual copies too; keep them pristine for your heirs! Sell them for vast profits and buy a small island! The choice is yours …
Unlike another UK-based singles club we’ve featured this year the Too Pure one has consistently managed to provide their discs month on month. This time around it’s back to the Leeds area and the turn of trio These Monsters whose two tracks get an airing on glorious blood red vinyl.
‘The Swamp’ is a heavy, mid-paced number that melds elements of Kong and Biffy Clyro together, featuring as it does (mainly) clear vocals over a layered & tortuous guitar-driven backing track. Swamp-like no less.
B-side ‘The Dogs’ is a rather more straightforward proposition to begin with, with its repeated phrases around the issue of sinking or swimming & choosing to let yourself go to the dogs or not. Livelier guitar parts crop up as the song progresses though, as do more hollered vocals. There’s enough here then to mark the band as one probably worth checking out live & their sound certainly lends itself to the approaching longer nights.
