Thieves Like Us – Play Music
“Go downtown with the drugs in my body”, rings the mantra of the first single, ‘Drugs In My Body,’ off of Play Music. Risqué lyrics paired with an electro-rific sound that might warrant instant dancing leaves listeners wanting more from these newcomers, Thieves Like Us. And with album artwork of a girl in heels, passed out on a staircase, drink still in hand and spilling on the ground, what’s not to love?
Unfortunately, not every song on the album is equally electrifying. There are a few more gems, such as opening track ‘Program of the First Part’: six minutes of a fast-moving patchwork quilt of beats and ‘Miss You’: more retro-sounding with a super-catchy chorus.
The monotonous vocals seem to work when backed with these upbeat twangs, but on songs such as ‘Program of the Second Part,’ it is a bit less invigorating and a bit more droning.
The three men who met in Berlin and formed Thieves Like Us claim they wanted to create their own genre of electro because they didn’t like what the city had to offer them. It is refreshing to finally hear some electronic music backed with emotional lyrics, and the album does have some unexpected turns. The band could be on their way to an excellent new variety of electronic music, but we think it needs a bit more work.
