They Came From The Stars, I Saw Them

Think The Zutons mated with Button Moon, and you’re pretty close to the sound TCFTIST achieve on this single. A peon to the cratered lump orbiting us in the heavens the tune is, at close to five minutes long, a bit of a repetitive drag. Clearly influenced by free-jazz, prog and all things pop the disparate elements are unfortunately not brought together to very enjoyable effect. Despite a fleetingly nice oboe solo near the beginning the most memorable thing about the song are the attempted wolf howls (sounds like that to me anyway)…

In an effort to get a broader idea of what the band are about I checked them out on My Space (http://www.myspace.com/theycamefromthestarsisawthem) and, whilst the other five songs they currently have posted all bear similar hallmarks to ‘Moon Song’, taken en masse they point towards a Blockheads-esque sensibility which is a bit more positive. They’ve also got some amusing captions attached to their Italian tour pictures and the Emperor Machine remix of Signals is a welcome change. Considering they’ve slogged away at the music game since 1999 I expect there’s a good chance of better things to come.
