The Research – I Think She’s The One I Love

null
Hurray! The Research are back! And they sound as lusciously lo-fi as ever!
One instantly noticeable change from their previous work is that Russell ‘The Disaster’ has a guitar in his hand! And he’s playing it in the video! The rest of the gang, Sarah Williams and Georgia Lashbrook , are also present and correct. They are still on their old drum and bass configuration.
The song starts with The Disaster’s heartbroken crooning over his new found instrument, asking to “…feel the tenderness of lips of that love (him) anyway…”, before the gorgeous Phil Spector inspired wall of sound kicks in for the chorus, with the girls providing the backing harmonies like a choir of angels.
This open confession of love is typical of The Research, but also shows a progression musically from their earlier work – it’s in the wider use of instrumentation (as well as the new use of guitars, I spotted a melodian, a string section and, of course, the good old Casio dotted about all over the song), as the harmonies were already there.
All in all, ‘I Think She’s The One I Love’ is a triumphant return by The Research. They build on a winning formula by creating a more grandiose sound, and you cant help but feel a little more love for them than before.
This is how pop music should sound.
