The Mary Onettes – Dare EP
The Mary Onettes
Quite an Eighties-inspired sound on offer here from the Swedish trio The Mary Onettes, and not just through the name of the disc.
The title track is very redolent of Echo & The Bunnymen, with its echoey production, jangly guitars and heartfelt vocals. Second track ‘Kicks’ has a more Doves-like feel and is a slower, more atmospheric number featuring plenty of piano.
The third and final song, ‘God Knows I Had Plans’, is similar in style to the first but reaches greater emotional heights. For a band this accomplished it’s a surprise to find out that having been together for nine years this is only their fourth EP release, albeit they have also had one album out in that time too. They should by rights strike a chord with the record-buying public on the back of this display of their obvious talents.
But will they? In a field already in danger of being over-populated by skinny young Brit and US combos the chances of a breakthrough are even slimmer than most of those aforementioned competitors.
At best they’ll keep themselves happy and continue to enjoy whatever level of success they’ve had to date. Which in itself is more than a lot of people can manage.
