The Late Greats – Destroy My Brain

The Late Greats
Eastbourne’s current first sons of indie rock, The Late Greats, have a good, straight-ahead track on their hands here with this song.
Reminiscent at times of Young Knives and at others of Sebadoh it gets right up in your grill from the very start. Jagged guitars and staccato drums drive it along behind urgent vocals bemoaning the all too ready desire of sections of society to cover their ears to aspects of the world we live in that don’t conform to their views or sensibilities (in large part the band’s music it seems but the bigger picture is obvious).
The video is a bit of a let down, especially compared to the one for their song ‘Gareth’ (see below) with its playful pink dinosaur, being a collection of coloured in stock footage (nuclear explosions etc.) and found images interspersed with the odd bit of animation. Whilst undeniably a tune that you’d find it hard to stick a narrative film to the associated moving pictures nevertheless fail to really grab one’s attention.
Negativity about the visuals aside this is a tune, lifted from the Life Without Balloons album, that showcases very well a lesser known but no less talented band in excellent form and with quite possibly more stamina than a lot of their peers.
