The Last Four… records I listened to that made me stop in my tracks

M83 - Saturdays = Youth
Following on from September’s quadpartite set of columns from moi, it’s now time for the first in another four-part series of Last Fours. Still there? Good, because impending is a rundown of the last four records of this year that’ve made me stop in my tracks.
The Week That Was – The Week That Was
Super-brilliance from former Field Music man, Peter Brewis, this album is more low-slung and percussive than any of his former band’s output. And yet it’s still got that yearning complexity that becomes more and more intriguing with every listen.
The Chap – Mega Breakfast
From the all-out electro-disco of ‘They Have A Name’ to the lawsuit-waiting-to-happen ADHD of ‘Carlos Walter Wendy Stanley’, this is the sonic equivalent of a kipper to the face. Completely uncontained aural joy, it makes practically everything else sound meek.
Evangelicals - The Evening Descends
Psychotic, histrionic and spectacular all at once, it’s all tied together by a marked eagerness to push forward. Album highlight ‘Midnight Vignette’ personifies the mania brilliantly, and it’s strange that this album hasn’t broken out into the mainstream… yet.
M83 – Saturdays = Youth
It’s one of those ‘everyone loves it’ albums, but for once, it’s worth all of the praise and some. Epic soundscapes comprising everything from neo-Bush (Kate not Dubya) to pre-OMD (theoretically) show off M83′s unique way with a rich texture.
