The Flight – ‘Hangman’

What happens when two producers hang up their producing hats and decide to create something of their own? Well, in the case of Joe Henson and Alexis Smith, the result turns out to be something quite marvellous indeed. Having produced for some of the top names in music, and having racked up an impressive list of composing credits in television, gaming, and advertising, the London duo are now setting out as artists in their own right.
Set for release on 10th March 2013 ‘Hangman’ will be The Flight‘s first release, the first EP in a series that will see them collaborate with a number of guest artists in the lead up to the release of their debut album. ‘Hangman’ is made up of four diverse tracks, and is being led by the track ‘Hangman’, which you can treat your ears to on Soundcloud.
If the title of the track sounds dark, that’s because it is; ‘Hangman’ being a modern retelling of the folk song ‘Pretty Polly’. A murder ballad, the song describes a young woman’s grizzly fate after being tempted from home and into a forest, where she ends up buried in a shallow grave. Following on from this bleak beginning, we’re promised that the remainder of the EP will feature songs written from the perspective of her killer, a man who becomes a rueful ghost after being executed for her murder.
The newly released video – a killer dark animation shot through with Gothic imagery – that accompanies the track is available for your viewing pleasure on YouTube, and if this first taste of what The Flight have to offer is anything to go by, the upcoming EP should definitely be worth looking out for.
