Neil Finn – Dizzy Heights

February 4, 2014 Album, Reviews 2 Comments

By Paul Faithfull

February 4, 2014

“You know more Crowded House songs than you think” was the tagline of the TV ad campaign used to promote Recurring Dream, the Kiwi group’s best of in 1996 (seriously, that’s 18 years ago… yikes!).  Lead singer of the group, and part time mentor of Flight of the Conchords, Neil Finn returns in 2014 with his seventh solo work, and first on Lester Records, Dizzy Heights. … Continue Reading

Phill Vidler – The Fog EP

January 24, 2014 Album, Reviews, Underexposed 2 Comments

By David Lownds

January 24, 2014

Phill Vidler’s new EP, The Fog, is a great departure from his previous album The World’s Not Looking, which saw him playing several instruments in many different styles, yet ultimately lacking in much other than great variety and versatile musicianship; qualities that a lot of musicians don’t have but, nonetheless, attributes which do not make classic albums if alone. … Continue Reading

The Hot Five – My views on five tracks that have attracted my interest throughout the week. There’s usually an older or more obscure track thrown in the mix for something a bit different too. Tracks usually concentrate on guitar-based music, but really focus on anything and everything that comes to my attention. … Continue Reading

Anyone Can Play Guitar

By Kenny McMurtrie

November 29, 2011

When was the last time Mark Gardener was asked to turn it down by an annoyed old biddy? Probably not for many a year yet that’s what happened here tonight. Mid-way through his short semi-acoustic set a sinister silver-haired figure was seen to scurry in through the street door of the bar and engage the bar staff in animated conversation and two songs later it was all over. Fair enough – Midnight wasn’t far off and he’d only one more number up his sleeve but still, doesn’t a nice bloke occupying his place in the rock pantheon deserve some more respect? Clearly not from Supergran. … Continue Reading

Radiohead – TKOL RMX 1234567

Radiohead - TKOL RMX 1234567

By Greg Salter

TKOL RMX 1234567 is a compilation of the remix 12s that Radiohead have been gradually releasing over the last few months, since their eighth album, The King Of Limbs, arrived in February. With the 19 tracks on offer here, the band have done a pretty good job of bringing together many of the most exciting names in (UK based mainly) forward-looking dance music. For its first half or so, The King Of Limbs already sounded like it had one foot on the dancefloor (albeit in a very ‘Radiohead’,
creepy-guy-on-the-dancefloor kind of way
) – it twitched rather than raved, and many listeners may have seen this remix series as a way of pushing the band all the way into the dance/electronica genres that they’ve always insisted on folding into largely traditional song structures. … Continue Reading
