Museum Lates: Night of the Mummy

By Steve Mcgillivray

February 24, 2012

It’s not every day you get to go an see a band in a museum. Luckily tonight I was getting the chance to see two bands. That’s only part of what’s on offer though as the National Museum of Scotland is throwing open it’s doors to 2,000 people and letting them loose in the newly refurbished museum. As I wander in through the doors I’m pleased to see it’s a very mixed crowd. As you may reasonably expect, tonight’s draw is the building itself, and the many artefacts and items that are on show here, with the bands probably being the last thing on the majority of people’s minds. Not me however. Such is my overabundance of culture, I plan on taking in lots of exhibits and watching both bands. … Continue Reading

Frightened Rabbit, by Julia Stryj

By Julia Stryj

February 10, 2012

First up on stage for tonight’s HMV’s Next Big Thing are Fatherson. The Glaswegian three-piece (or should I say quartet, as a female cellist joins the three guys for one song) have some good turnout considering they are on pretty early. And while a lot of the audience seems to be family, friends and fans, they manage to win over the rest with their Scottish folk indie tunes and their cheery attitude. The Picture House is filling up more and by the time We Are Augustines are on, there isn’t that much space any more to move about. After talking to the three guys from Brooklyn it is strange to stand in front of them with a camera hiding my face.

The Black Keys by Julia Stryj

By Julia Stryj

February 4, 2012

Last Saturday I woke up with a huge smile on my face in anticipation of what should be a fantastic gig by The Black Keys and Band Of Skulls in the evening. When it started snowing just before lunch time I was getting worried I might not make it up to Edinburgh for the evening, but gladly the snow stopped and I set off early to get there in time for doors opening. … Continue Reading

Anyone Can Play Guitar

By Kenny McMurtrie

November 29, 2011

When was the last time Mark Gardener was asked to turn it down by an annoyed old biddy? Probably not for many a year yet that’s what happened here tonight. Mid-way through his short semi-acoustic set a sinister silver-haired figure was seen to scurry in through the street door of the bar and engage the bar staff in animated conversation and two songs later it was all over. Fair enough – Midnight wasn’t far off and he’d only one more number up his sleeve but still, doesn’t a nice bloke occupying his place in the rock pantheon deserve some more respect? Clearly not from Supergran. … Continue Reading

Zappa Plays Zappa, by Kenny McMurtrie

By Kenny McMurtrie

November 19, 2011

Finally. A gig worthy of the term ‘muso’, to the extent that you could have paid a three figure sum to get in early and witness the soundcheck (and probably have a bit of banter with Dweezil and the band). The maintenance of an ongoing musical legacy probably generates profits greater than that of some small nations, and t-shirts at £20 and proper shirts for £55 go a long way to keeping the family business in the black. … Continue Reading

Homework, by Kenny McMurtrie

By Kenny McMurtrie

November 18, 2011

Finally. After four years of contributing to this site I’ve got a band to tip for success in the coming year. Homework‘s show tonight (to launch mini-album All That Glitters) was a revelation, not least because prior to the show I’d been less than impressed with their recorded output on their earlier singles. Live, however, they’re a far weightier and more powerful proposition. Coming on like a combination of Nine Inch Nails, Placebo and Jane’s Addiction, their sound turns out to be a dazzling amalgam of intrepid drumming, solid basswork, yearning, angsty vocals and blunt, propulsive riffs along with extensively employed synths. … Continue Reading

Twin Sister, Edinburgh, Sneaky Pete’s

Twin Sister, By Kenny McMurtrie

By Kenny McMurtrie

Keen as mustard to be on stage for the capacity crowd here tonight Twin Sister delivered note perfect renderings of such numbers as ‘Champy’ and set closer ‘All Around And Away We Go’, along with a couple (including the encore) of duets between just Andrea (looking a tad over-dressed for the event) and Eric. Undoubtedly a nice bunch, their music comes across well in a live setting but one couldn’t help but feel that it would be even better appreciated without having the band actually visible as a point of reference. … Continue Reading
