Patrick Wolf’ Vulture

Patrick Wolf - Vulture
Patrick Wolf is in a difficult position right now. The success of his last album, The Magic Position, on which he employed wind chimes and what we’d imagine the Animals Of Farthing Wood might sound like in a studio to create a quirky, hippie edge to his music, set an unexpected benchmark for his future work. Given that his catalogue before it was good but not so great, he has a lot to prove.
Out on his own following a dispute with Universal about the two-disc follow-up, The Bachelor and The Conqueror being too ‘dark’, Wolf releases the first single ‘Vultures’, on his own imprint Bloody Chamber Music.
A comparatively stripped-down track, tying in with the harsh realism of his lyrics “Losing my head to Hollywood/my liver to London/my youth to Tokyo “All my dead meat yearns/for the vulture’s return“ it’s a harder edge of Wolf we haven’t seen before. It’s a good comeback; the offbeat singer still has a very thought-provoking way of creating sound, but it isn’t as delicate or mood-lifting as his past work and the lack of unusual string instruments Patrick has always been keen to show his skill in playing is disappointing.
Ignoring the rumours that Wolf was depressed during the period he wrote the album, here’s hoping the rest of it isn’t quite as sorrowful.
