The day starts with an hour and a half’s drive to Leeds, which may be enough for some people not to bother – but with a specially-made mix CD full of tunes from the artists we hope to see at the festival we’re in a pretty good mood by the time we rock into town. … Continue Reading

Festival Coverage : Long Division

By Kenny McMurtrie

May 13, 2013

Long Division takes place in Wakefield , and is put on by the Rhubarb Bomb blog. For the 2013 incarnation of the festival (in conjunction with Jonny The Firth and Wolfyboy Records of Leeds) 7 venues in the city will host 70 acts over the course of 07 – 09 June. Those acts already confirmed at time of writing include The Fall, Nine Black Alps, Ghostpoet, Jeffrey Lewis, The History Of Apple Pie, Howard Marks, RM Hubbert and The Spills. With tickets at a mere £20 this is a festival that’s pretty much off the scale in terms of value for money.

Dean Freeman from Rhubarb Bomb was kind enough to answer a few questions that we put to him about the organisation of the weekend’s activities:- … Continue Reading

Is Tropical – I’m Leaving

May 13, 2013 Album, Reviews 8 Comments

By Carris Boast

May 13, 2013.

Is Tropical’s Simon Milner, Gary Barber and Dominic Apa have been away for a while working on their second album I’m Leaving. This album is far from the same bass driven dance songs found on debut album Native, but enhances bass and guitar elements which has lead them to create distinguishing sounds that blend their retro, dance style with progressive guitars; it wouldn’t fail to be forgotten in anyone’s record collection and should probably be the catalyst for more air time on the radio. … Continue Reading

The National – Trouble Will Find Me

May 13, 2013 Album, Reviews 11 Comments

May 13, 2013.

Whilst on tour with the likes of R.E.M. and Modest Mouse, if you wanted the kind of American indie rock that narrates about self-inflicted doubt and anxieties, The National was probably the pick of the day. Their career, at this point, can probablybe categorised   into three different sections: Their first two albums, the Alligator and Boxer period, and the post-Boxer era comprising High Violet and their new album, Trouble Will Find Me. High Violet felt different from their previous albums, and maybe it had to. For if you start hitting bigger venues, probably you need to adjust your sound. If we learned anything from that David Byrne Ted Talk, it should be that. This new album again takes another few steps, going bigger on some songs, enlisting female vocalists on others, and for old fans the question is will it enchant them as much as their earlier work did.

Primal Scream – More Light

May 10, 2013 Album, Reviews 1 Comment

By Kenny McMurtrie

May 10, 2013

2013 isn’t a very sexy sounding year but given that the opening track on Primal Scream’s tenth album mentions “Thatcher’s children” & various other goings on from during the late Baroness’s time in power they’ve lucked in in terms of political commentary this year. … Continue Reading

May 10, 2013

Twenty years on from the original release of the Last Splash album The Breeders are now treading the boards playing it live from start to finish. Record-wise they’ve also released LSXX in support of the live performances – the original album, a round-up of ep tracks, demos & rarities and a third disc containing a 1992 live performance recorded by the BBC in Stockholm … Continue Reading

The Weekly Froth!

May 10, 2013

The Weekly Froth! A weekly take on six tracks, most of which have recently popped up somewhere in the blogosphere. Bit of a mixed bag with a slight leaning towards house, disco, and remixes, but generally just anything that for some reason tickled the writer’s fancy. … Continue Reading

April March & Aquaserge – April March & Aquaserge

May 9, 2013 Album, Reviews 1 Comment

By Kenny McMurtrie

May 09, 2013

April March has worked with rather a lot of other artists in her twenty year career to date and this is her fourth fully collaborative album. Indulging her beguiling take on all things French to the maximum this time she’s teamed up with Aquaserge, an outfit who seem to be a side-project for members of Tame Impala, Stereolab & Melody’s Echo Chamber. … Continue Reading

Four Tet – Rounds (Reissue)

By Emily Liddle

May 09, 2013

Kieran Hebden celebrates the tenth anniversary of arguably his most influential album, Rounds, by reissuing it on May 13. The master of musical computer science and experimental producer’s work as Four Tet paved the way for many current electronic artists – his influence is clearly there in work by acts such as Caribou and Bonobo. … Continue Reading

Mark Lanegan & Duke Garwood – Black Pudding

May 9, 2013 Album, Reviews 11 Comments

By Dominic Allen

May 09, 2013

This collaboration between Mark Lanegan and Duke Garwood is a bit of a head-scratcher. Potentially this stems from this being the first such project where Lanegan has been the main attraction rather than in an equal or supporting roll. After multiple listens this reviewer cannot quite decide if this is, as the man himself declares, the best piece of work that Lanegan has done or if it is Lanegan having a bit of a breather after the emotional exertions of his happy album Blues Funeral. … Continue Reading
