The Hot Five – My views on five tracks that have attracted my interest in any given week, usually with an older track thrown in the mix for something a bit different. Tracks usually concentrate on pop/rock releases, but really focusing on anything and everything that comes my way.

Tribes – Wish to Scream

May 15, 2013 Album, Reviews 1 Comment

May 15, 2013

For years now, music press such as the NME have been heralding the arrival of the saviours of rock ‘n’ roll – the bastions of real music – the preservers of all that is good about guitars. One year it was The Vaccines, this year it was Palma Violets and in 2012 it was Tribes. Unfortunately for the band, their first album Baby wasn’t quite the salvation the music press purported it to be; okay so there was a few good songs on it, but it was never going to live up to hype that had enveloped it. Much like the aforementioned bands, it was a case of musical hyperbole, the album was released to reasonable responses and then the band simply…fell off. That is, until now. The second studio album from the band, entitled  Wish to Scream is exactly the album that they should have released as their début and as far as the notorious sophomore album goes, Tribes have bloody nailed it.

Goldblade – The Terror of Modern Life

May 14, 2013 Album, Reviews 9 Comments

By Jono Coote

May 14, 2013

Goldblade are a band that have been lurking in the punk rock deep for almost 20 years now, putting out a steady stream of records and spreading their soulful punk rock ‘n’ roll through non-stop touring. Previous album Mutiny was on heavy rotation for me when it was released, so I was fairly stoked to hear The Terror of Modern Life, their first album in four years. On first listen, it sounds musically more ambitious than the sing-a-long raucousness of previous albums, although this is never far from the surface. … Continue Reading

Festival Coverage : HIPSVILLE – Friday Night

May 14, 2013 Festivals, Reviews 12 Comments

By Kenny McMurtrie

May 14, 2013

Yet another festival first in 2013 as we boldly headed down to Surrey for the first ever HIPSVILLE weekender. Amidst the continual sound of gunfire (Bisley happens to host the National Rifle Association’s HQ and dozens of shooting clubs) two nights and two afternoons of top drawer Sixties entertainment were on offer and it lived up to the billing. … Continue Reading

MS MR – Secondhand Rapture

May 14, 2013 Album, Reviews 11 Comments

By Carris Boast

May 14, 2013

The captivating sounds of Secondhand Rapture come from New York’s self proclaimed, Tumblr glitch pop band MS MR. Gloom and obscurity are hidden under layers of electronic production and dramatic fables. With the recent release of popular singles ‘Hurricane’ and ‘Fantasy’, MS MR are about to set off on a world tour setting sight for festivals such as Lovebox and the Reading / Leeds Festival. … Continue Reading

Roomrunner – Ideal Cities

May 14, 2013.

Music runs in cycles. While the ‘80s has been re-imagining and re-inventing itself for a whole new generation, Grunge and ‘90s alternative rock has been mostly sleeping. However, with the recent emergence of bands such as Milk Music and California X, it would seem that it’s slowly awakening from its slumbers.

Festival Coverage : Live at Leeds – Part 2

May 13, 2013

The day starts with an hour and a half’s drive to Leeds, which may be enough for some people not to bother – but with a specially-made mix CD full of tunes from the artists we hope to see at the festival we’re in a pretty good mood by the time we rock into town. … Continue Reading

Festival Coverage : Long Division

By Kenny McMurtrie

May 13, 2013

Long Division takes place in Wakefield , and is put on by the Rhubarb Bomb blog. For the 2013 incarnation of the festival (in conjunction with Jonny The Firth and Wolfyboy Records of Leeds) 7 venues in the city will host 70 acts over the course of 07 – 09 June. Those acts already confirmed at time of writing include The Fall, Nine Black Alps, Ghostpoet, Jeffrey Lewis, The History Of Apple Pie, Howard Marks, RM Hubbert and The Spills. With tickets at a mere £20 this is a festival that’s pretty much off the scale in terms of value for money.

Dean Freeman from Rhubarb Bomb was kind enough to answer a few questions that we put to him about the organisation of the weekend’s activities:- … Continue Reading

Is Tropical – I’m Leaving

May 13, 2013 Album, Reviews 8 Comments

By Carris Boast

May 13, 2013.

Is Tropical’s Simon Milner, Gary Barber and Dominic Apa have been away for a while working on their second album I’m Leaving. This album is far from the same bass driven dance songs found on debut album Native, but enhances bass and guitar elements which has lead them to create distinguishing sounds that blend their retro, dance style with progressive guitars; it wouldn’t fail to be forgotten in anyone’s record collection and should probably be the catalyst for more air time on the radio. … Continue Reading

The National – Trouble Will Find Me

May 13, 2013 Album, Reviews 11 Comments

By Stef Siepel

May 13, 2013.

Whilst on tour with the likes of R.E.M. and Modest Mouse, if you wanted the kind of American indie rock that narrates about self-inflicted doubt and anxieties, The National was probably the pick of the day. Their career, at this point, can probablybe categorised   into three different sections: Their first two albums, the Alligator and Boxer period, and the post-Boxer era comprising High Violet and their new album, Trouble Will Find Me. High Violet felt different from their previous albums, and maybe it had to. For if you start hitting bigger venues, probably you need to adjust your sound. If we learned anything from that David Byrne Ted Talk, it should be that. This new album again takes another few steps, going bigger on some songs, enlisting female vocalists on others, and for old fans the question is will it enchant them as much as their earlier work did.
