Music runs in cycles. While the ‘80s has been re-imagining and re-inventing itself for a whole new generation, Grunge and ‘90s alternative rock has been mostly sleeping. However, with the recent emergence of bands such as Milk Music and California X, it would seem that it’s slowly awakening from its slumbers.

Long Division takes place in Wakefield , and is put on by the Rhubarb Bomb blog. For the 2013 incarnation of the festival (in conjunction with Jonny The Firth and Wolfyboy Records of Leeds) 7 venues in the city will host 70 acts over the course of 07 – 09 June. Those acts already confirmed at time of writing include The Fall, Nine Black Alps, Ghostpoet, Jeffrey Lewis, The History Of Apple Pie, Howard Marks, RM Hubbert and The Spills. With tickets at a mere £20 this is a festival that’s pretty much off the scale in terms of value for money.

Is Tropical’s Simon Milner, Gary Barber and Dominic Apa have been away for a while working on their second album I’m Leaving. This album is far from the same bass driven dance songs found on debut album Native, but enhances bass and guitar elements which has lead them to create distinguishing sounds that blend their retro, dance style with progressive guitars; it wouldn’t fail to be forgotten in anyone’s record collection and should probably be the catalyst for more air time on the radio. … Continue Reading

Whilst on tour with the likes of R.E.M. and Modest Mouse, if you wanted the kind of American indie rock that narrates about self-inflicted doubt and anxieties, The National was probably the pick of the day. Their career, at this point, can probablybe categorised into three different sections: Their first two albums, the Alligator and Boxer period, and the post-Boxer era comprising High Violet and their new album, Trouble Will Find Me. High Violet felt different from their previous albums, and maybe it had to. For if you start hitting bigger venues, probably you need to adjust your sound. If we learned anything from that David Byrne Ted Talk, it should be that. This new album again takes another few steps, going bigger on some songs, enlisting female vocalists on others, and for old fans the question is will it enchant them as much as their earlier work did.
