Whether or not tonight’s set is part of a concentrated attempt by Susanne Sundfør to ‘crack’ the UK is unclear, but with the instant accessibility of songs like ‘White Foxes’ synthesising with her established eccentricities throughout excellent new album The Silicone Veil, it’s not a huge leap to say she has been successful in her mission.

Here at Muso’s Guide it’s becoming pretty plain that we like the new work that Stornoway are putting out, after taking a bit longer than is maybe normal to come up with latest album Tales From Terra Firma therefore not content with our double-sized feature and interview with the band from earlier this month (here and here) we let Rosie Duffield loose on the album for a further assessment of its worth. … Continue Reading

Saturday Soap Box! Bow Down to your New God : How RiFF RaFF Will Rule Hip Hop In 2013

By Richard Wink

March 18, 2013

I may be in the minority, but I believe that Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers will be the most culturally significant film release of 2013, as a result of its staggering depiction of the decadence and decay of the cheddar chasing youth of today. There is one man who will benefit most from Spring Breakers: a man who manages to influence the entire look of the film, from the girls in balaclavas to the white dude in cornrows, and all without even appearing on the soundtrack. And who is this cultural behemoth? Why, that man is a rapper named RiFF RaFF. Mr RaFF has already acknowledged that James Franco’s interpretation of him in the film will make him millions; all he has to do is sit back and let the money drip down. The epitome of passive income. … Continue Reading

Suede – Bloodsports

March 18, 2013 Album, Reviews 3 Comments

By Ben Gibson

March 18, 2013

When Suede broke up in 2003 Brett Anderson famously told journalists he needed to “get his demon back”. It is easy to see why, as aside from a couple of songs, Suede’s final two albums (Head Music and A New Morning) were serious disappointments.

March 15, 2013

The Kinks aren’t the only good thing to have come out of North London. Garage duo Man Like Me return this month with their new album Pillow Talk. Johnny Langer and Pete Duffy are mostly known for starring in adverts with Jona Lewie. After seeing them at the Lounge on the Farm Festival last summer we knew these guys would be ones to watch. Their performance as well as their music is always energetic and uncannily smart. … Continue Reading

The Weekly Froth! A weekly take on six tracks, most of which have recently popped up somewhere in the blogosphere. Bit of a mixed bag with a slight leaning towards house, disco, and remixes, but generally just anything that for some reason tickled the writer’s fancy. … Continue Reading

Marnie Stern – The Chronicles of Marnia

March 15, 2013 Album, Reviews No Comments

By Rob Aldam

March 15, 2013

After the release of her debut record In Advance of the Broken Arm, Marnie Stern was soon heralded as the greatest living female guitarist. She has since been wildly lauded for her technical skills and manic finger-tapping style; following up her debut with two critically acclaimed albums rife with high octane intensity and giddy abandon. The Chronicles of Marnia signals a slight change of direction and focus. Whilst she has taken her foot off the gas somewhat (it still feels like a whirlwind at times), her characteristic style and flair is ever-present. … Continue Reading

It’s only a year since Al Spx released her startlingly well-formed and engrossing debut LP I Predict A Graceful Expulsion, but the young artist is already starting to show signs of restlessness about showcasing the old material. This generally manifests itself positively, especially through the promisingly enrapturing smattering of new material offered up tonight. … Continue Reading
