Now Playing: Wave Machines – ‘Ill Fit’
Now Playing – every week, a roundtable of our writers will give their views on one of the recently-released new tracks. It’s as simple as that! If you want to tell us what you think of the song, feel free to leave a comment below.
Track: ‘Ill Fit by Wave Machines
Average Grade: 6.0
Richard: ‘Punk Spirit’ by Wave Machines is one of the most delightful songs ever written. ‘Ill Fit’ is on the opposite spectrum of ‘Punk Spirit’, and that’s what you get with Wave Machines, plenty of spanners thrown into the expected works. Their songs vary from the sublime to the peculiar. I like ‘Ill Fit’, because it is somewhat flawed, derivative of horrid electro gash from the time of Buck Rogers. Wonky synth works, I guess. 7/10
Tom: A compelling track driven by queasy, tense synths, this is an intriguing listen. It’s a bit too self-conscious to be more than that, and also too focused on sounding like something else – Prince, mostly – than on being itself. 6/10
Kenny: Lightweight, reminded me of Scissor Sisters but didn’t grab me and wouldn’t inspire me to listen to an album’s worth so 5/10
Anna: That is just annoying. And not even annoying in an interesting kind of way. Let’s just have more James Franco; fellow reviewers, I’ll know you’ll stand by me. 4/10
Linda: Singing this high is risky: it can result in some amazing (see Muse), or something horrible (again, see Muse). For this track, it’s definitely working though. 7/10
Stef: It does remind me of something, but I can’t quite put my finger on it at the moment. High vocals, strained delivery, and dark and synthy sounds. I think somewhere it lacks a bit of punch, though definitely worth the listen. 7/10
