The Hives

Now Playing – twice every week, a roundtable of our writers will give their views on some of the recently-released new tracks. It’s as simple as that! If you want to tell us what you think of the song, feel free to leave a comment below.

Track: ‘Go Right Ahead’ by The Hives

Average grade: 4.8

Go here to listen to the track.

Anna: I do love me some Hives. My issue with this one is that parts of it sound a lot like ELO’s ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’ (unless they are sampling?). The parts that don’t, are quite enjoyable, with their fast pace and uprising vocals that feel quite addictive. Not up there with their best material though. 6.5/10

James: The Hives never fail to produce slick, slightly chaotic, slap you in the face rock. Got a while to wait for more but this snippet shows they’re return is not one to be messed with. 7/10

Stuart: ‘Go Right Ahead’ does nothing but make you remember why you hated The Hives the first time around. This is uninspired, vacuous pop-rock of the lowest order. Most heinously, it spuriously attempts to masquerade as catchy toe-tapping dance floor filler when, in fact, it merely sounds like something a coked-up Brandon Flowers might have written and attempted to sell to McFly – only to be told to naff off because it is shit. My advice is to throw ‘Scream, Dracula, Scream!’ by Rocket from the Crypt back on your turntable instead and listen to this stuff done good. 2/10

Linda: Wow, this is very impressive by the Hives. They’re about to release their fourth album and have been around for almost 20 years, but they still manage to make every single sound exactly the same. There are parts of this track that seem to have been copied straight of the last single I heard of them ‘Tick Tick Boom’, which sounds like your average garage rock single. However, live they transform into an amazing performance act, which is the only reason they are still going (that and their ability to make the sun come out at rainy festivals). So lets stop pretending that anyone really cares about any of the singles released by the Swedes and provide them with some extra time and money for their snazzy stage outfits and dance routines, okay? 2/10

Rosie: This is recognisably a Hives track – crashing drums, thrashing guitars and shouty vocals.  I haven’t heard anything of theirs for a while and quite like this, it’s a bit heavier than their previous stuff and is a good, solid rock track.  7/10

Stef: Yeah, it is what it is really, isn’t it? Straight forward guitar rock, bit tongue-in-cheek, it’s The Hives, though I don’t think this is their best one. It’s kind of, more muddled than previous efforts I find, and it is that its the title of the song, otherwise I would’ve sworn they were singing Roll down the hay (which, probably much like the actual lyrics, means absolutely nothing). 4/10
