Jessie Ware

Now Playing – twice every week, a roundtable of our writers will give their views on some of the recently-released new tracks. It’s as simple as that! If you want to tell us what you think of the song, feel free to leave a comment below.

Track: ‘Running’ by Jessie Ware

Average Grade: 6.9

James: Jessie Ware has already proved herself on numerous collaborations with the likes of SBTRKT and Sampha so it’s nice to see her making a name for herself. Really like how she’s managed to put her own twist on the genre. It’s as though she’s hopped in a time machine, hit a dancefloor in the ’80s and Frankenstein-style (smooth as you like without all the nuts and bolts) fused it with the present day. 8/10

Anna: This is fine and sweet if you like Sade. I don’t. 4/10

Linda: Simple, elegant and very catchy. She’s really found the perfect balance between pop and soul here. 9/10

Stuart: Jessie Ware. The name conjures thoughts of sandwich boxes for wimps. Anyway, ‘Running’ sounds a bit like Mariah Carey circa The Emancipation of Mimi only without the histrionic vocals and overwrought production. This is solid enough R&B pop, though it’ll be a little lightweight for devotees. Maybe the album will contain material with more heft. 5/10

Stef: The last couple of years I’ve passed on Winehouse, Adele, and a host of other female singers with a big sound. This, this though, seriously, this I find fantastic. She’s got a great voice, love how the music behind her provides a nice template for her to strut her stuff while never coming in to battle her. Color me impressed. 8.5/10
