Track: ‘Cough Cough’ by Everything Everything
Average grade: 7.2
Tom: A seriously hyperactive song, this takes a while to come to terms with because of its agitated ambiance. However, once it starts to grow on you it reveals layers of sound – a skittering bass, marching band snare drums, and crunchy synths – that match the falsetto night-terrors lyrics in their needle-skipping groove. Unsettling. Good. 8/10
Kenny: So there’s a Hot Chip meets Futureheads thing going on here. Which is musically interesting but the vocals (sometimes shouty, sometimes psudo-rap, sometimes Chris Martin-like) didn’t do it for me at all so 4/10.
Rosie: Love the syncopation in this – there’s so much going on it really makes you listen for every note (rather than think: this is a big mess). Lots of interesting things going on at different levels, and you have to admire the way it’s performed – it must be pretty difficult to get everything just right. Really good! 9/10
Anna: This is… well, I’m not sure what this is. All-over-the-place vocals, insane percussion, cacophonous synths… I LIKE IT. 8/10
Stef: I like the kind of disjointed vocals, they do set the atmosphere for this song. There’s some punch and fury going on there, and a bit of emotion one way or another is never a bad thing (well…). I would’ve loved if that drum ending would’ve been some sort of intermezzo in the middle. Now it seems rather like a well-we-have-to-end-this-thing-some-way kind of affair. 7/10
