Now Playing: Chromatics – ‘Candy’
Now Playing – twice every week, a roundtable of our writers will give their views on some of the recently-released new tracks. It’s as simple as that! If you want to tell us what you think of the song, feel free to leave a comment below.
Track: ‘Candy’ by Chromatics
Average Grade: 5.5
Kenny: What’s that you say? The track’s just been played? Surely not otherwise I’d have heard it and taken it in. Sadly not. Aural candyfloss deserving a mere 2/10
Tom: I have to confess to not knowing what Italian disco sounds like, but if that’s what the Chromatics do and if it sounds like ‘Candy’, I quite like it. This is a slow motion, moody electro ballad and it sounds a little like 21st century Suzie and the Banshees, but fortunately not as earnest. It’s deceptively simple, but right from the first velvety “Caaaandy” there’s a reassuring feeling that this band knows what it’s doing. And their new album includes Neil Young covers. Excellent!” 8/10
Richard: ‘Candy’ is what I imagine music sounds like when you’re tonked up on selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors; drowsy electro that dampens my spirits. There is a great deal of detached egocentric music getting released at the moment, and this track can get lumped in with the sound of not woe is me, but overflowing apathy. I’m sad, but happy that I am. I’m monosyllabic, because my iphone doesn’t have a thesaurus app. 2/10
Stephanie: Before ‘Candy’ I had never heard of Chromatics but the track has been on repeat since first play and their new album has promptly been added to the playlist! Sounding like it was stripped straight from the incredible Drive soundtrack, Ruth Radelet’s soft haunting vocals are accompanied by an ’80s-esque slow drum synth and subtle strings. It’s sexy, emotive and damn cool. The lyrics are sparing but at only 2minutes 44seconds, it’s far from boring, just addictive. 8/10
Stef: Yeah, this is probably a love it or hate it track as you can see. I like that whole Italians Do it Better aesthetic, though I do think this is fairly slow and perhaps not its best representative. But if you like it, give it some time to grow on you, give it some attention, then it’s quite beautiful indeed. 7.5/10
