Youthless

Or, to be frank, Youthless introduce themselves. Or, to be more specific, Youthless’ Alex introduces Youthless and we add some sample mp3s for y’all to check out. Ok, enough from us…

Youthless is Sab and I. I play drums and sing and sometimes I play synth lines with my free hand. Sab sings and plays bass through two amps which he alternates between using a footswitch. We also use a bunch of weird FX boxes and other toys. It’s a bit of a strange set up but somehow, amidst all the confusion, we manage to bang out some rockin’ tunes.

Sab and I met when we were 15, in high-school in Lisbon, Portugal. Sab’s English, but he was born and raised in Portugal, and I’m from New York City but I moved to Lisbon as a teen. We’d used to skip class together to go play guitar by the river, and somehow not much has really changed since then. We’ve been through lots of shit together, first bong hits, first night in jail, wisdom teeth.

Youthless started as a total fluke. Sab used to play drums and I played guitar in a three piece we had with a good buddy. I really wanted to learn how to play drums so sometimes we’d hang out after practice and play Black Sabbath covers or just do noise sets. One day Sab came up with the double-amp monster bass sound idea and it was so cool that we came up with our first four songs right there on the spot. After our first three shows in Lisbon, mainly for friends, we were invited to come do some gigs in London and stuff’s been going from there.

We hate penning a style, it immediately starts limiting what you do (we actually avoided thinking of a band name for our first few months for that very reason). The truth is our sound kind of goes where it wants to anyway, I don’t really think we’re all that in control. So far though, when forced to the task, we’ve been said: “Youthless is primitive art, Marshall McLuhan‘s promise of a new electric tribalism, barbarian pop genius.” I guess that kind of sums it all up.

As for hopes and aspirations, I want Philip Glass and Diplo to collaborate on a Youthless remix, and Sab wants to drive a rolls royce into a swimming pool.

Youthless are great – have a listen for yourselves by downloading these two awesome tracks, courtesy of us.
