The doomy, tucked into the background, piano from George Martin lurks in the shadows much like Lennon. That is if it wasn’t one of the best examples of the production techniques employed on Sgt.

Have to agree with "It's All Too Much" being underrated/appreciated. Such a great track and by far one of Harrison's best.

Wow. Right on the money. I've always felt There's A Place, No Reply (I love that last "no reply". J and P just nail it! And then that great final accepting chord as you mentioned), and I'll Be Back are among the Beatles best. I also might quibble with Dear Prudence as far as being underappreciated. I think it's fairly well known though some may think Souisee and The Banshees (?) wrote it. I would add, and you may pick just one to keep it at ten if we take away Prudence, Not A Second Time, This Boy, It Won't Be Long, Wait,Long Long Long, Girl, And Your Bird Can Sing, She Said She Said, Happiness is A Warm Gun.

I think its important to let the wider public know that what makes the Beatles superb is not the singles. Even when they were touring, and just "filling" albums with songs that are not considered masterpieces, they still came up with gems. Its funny, being a fan for so long and having had the songs on CD for 15 years, I forget that other people who only know their singles havent heard the songs you mentioned (except Dear Prudence was on Across the Universe - a lot of younger generations got into the Beatles because of that movie so I don't agree with that song being here). And its those songs that made me fall in love with them, especially "It's all too much " and "I am the Walrus" (although I am the Walrus is one of their most popular its still obscure and not often on the radio). When a new compilation comes out I do wonder why so many great songs are left off, like "Savoy Truffel", "Everybodies got Something to hide except for me and my Monkey", You're mother should know" etc.. I hope brand new fans who get into Rock Band the buy the remastered albums find a new appreciation for the b-sides, the experiments and the random songs that, for me, make The Beatles the best band in the world.

In a way that's true and false. While it's not up for much debate that if you polled the British / US public on the best band (or more pertinent what they thought would the most named best band, Keynesian beauty contest and that) they would likely win comfortably. What isn't often considered is the sheer amount of reasons why they should be at the top of that tree. A recent edition of The Word carried the feature "Why The Beatles are Underrated" and it explored the ways in which not just the brilliant music they created influenced the history of popular music but the way their story and other things they did formed a backdrop of what we expect from a band.

As famous as the band are, and for all the album polls which see Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper, The Beatles and Abbey Road sitting at or near the top, the average person in the street is probably not familiar with much of their catalogue outside their singles and a few more famous album tracks.

Good list. I'd add "Rain" and "I'm Down," as b-sides that easily could have been a-sides.

Amazing to think of Harrison's track 'It's All Too Much' sat around for that long before coming out
on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack. It's a great song with a great sound! Can't argue with any of these suggestions as being under appreciated.

Brady in Lincoln, NE, USA

TO be fair, Mitchell; 'The Beatles' and 'Under-appreciated' is totally tautological.
