Fenech Soler – The Cult Of Romance/Airbrushed

Fenech Soler

Fenech Soler

I suspect that King’s Cliffe is lacking in great electro bands, but at least they have one, Fenech Soler. Incidentally, putting Fenech into your image search engine brings up a lot of pictures of a 1960s erotic actress, so just be careful if you’re at work.

‘The Cult Of Romance’, while sounding like the name of an ’80s synth act sounds… a bit like an 80s synth act, but in the best possible way, great gritty keyboards, an awesomely dancey beat and hooky lyrics all pull the track together wonderfully. The track has a taste of Calvin Harris but with a lot more individuality and a bit more groove and lip smacking dynamics.  Never smacked your lips at dynamics? Listen to this and you might.

The vocals are spot on, in tune, simple (no R&B warbles here) and really just suit the whole vibe of this little gem of a track.  While most acts nowadays (God I sound old) are trying to ape ’80s songs and at best just sound like another track from that era Fenech Soler are taking in aspects of the decade, but twisting it into something contemporary and, dare I say it, very radio friendly.

The B-side, ‘Airbrushed’ is similarly 80s themed in terms of the synth sounds used, but feels much, much more like a future club classic, the beats are more suited to it, I’m not saying it’ll turn up on Cream 6548.9! or anything, but I can definitely see it getting some big dance floor play from DJs. If you like your music 80s themed, hell, if you like your music, check out Fenech Soler, you’d be a fool not to.

Former journalism student and current fussy reviewer. Prone to going off on a rant unrelated to the music itself, but probably more to do with the name of the group being reviewed or the song title. Based in Newcastle, but hoping to soon relocate due to nothing much happening there, other than the occasional gig or cheap drinks night. Listens to a range of music, from hardcore punk and black metal to 80s pop and blues and always happy to review whatever he's given, if only to have a chance to be mean to someone he's never met (also laughs at children falling over). Also enjoys horror movies, 1950s to 1980s, especially the Evil Dead series, if only for the comedy and ridiculous special effects. If he wasn't writing for Muso's Guide he'd probably be drinking a cup of tea, enjoying a good sit and getting annoyed by that ginger one from Girls Aloud, despite only being 21 years old.
