Delphic – This Momentary

‘This Momentary’ is the second single from Manchester’s Delphic, and much like the output of local contemporaries The Longcut explores that oft-mined territory where the city’s post-punk heritage meets the dynamics of modern dance music. So far, so straightforward crossover stuff, but there’s a charm to ‘This Momentary’ that elevates it above your standard fare.

On cursory listen, the slowly building synths and almost-chanted vocal mantra breeze past in a pleasant but undemanding way, a sugar rush but without the substance to keep the high going. Still, by the time the song dissolves into a manic percussive breakdown halfway through, Delphic make a successful grab for the attention that rewards repeated listens with tiny nuances so easy to miss first time round.

Even if it doesn’t scale the heights of the best of The Longcut’s recent work, there’s an ambition at work here that should make Delphic a proposition worth keeping an eye on.
