Chickenhawk – A. Or Not?

Chickenhawk
Fresh from supporting labelmates Kong, Leeds’ rising stars Chickenhawk hit us up with three tracks fit to loosen your waistbands and and make your eardrums buzz.
For a band that plays as intensely as they do the surprisingly prog-rock sounds they mange to incorporate in the overall shouty/screamy/thumpy/thrashy sound they produce (a quarter more intense than this time last year following their expansion to a quartet). Opener ‘I Hate This, Do You Like It?’, promoted by a great zombie-themed video, starts off like Rush on 78rpm then quickly sets up a driving and multi-layered rythym to drag you into the realm of the ‘Hawks. They certainly hate something but they clearly also love showing it.
Getting a bit scientific on track two, ‘Son Of Cern’, the pummeling and yowelling continue apace. Not sure if this is about getting sucked into a Swiss created blackhole but listened to loud enough I think it could produce a similar effect on the synapses. Sticking with science of sorts on the final track we learn of one boy’s dream to conquer the heavens and of the battle between space agencies on ‘NASA Vs ESA’. A few proggy solos in here amongst the heavier pounding stuff, a singalong wind-out and another good video (great taches) round this all up into a great stop-gap package to keep, and indeed gain, fans satisfied until their second album comes out in the hopefully not too distant future.
