Four Tet – Rounds (Reissue)

By Emily Liddle

May 09, 2013

Kieran Hebden celebrates the tenth anniversary of arguably his most influential album, Rounds, by reissuing it on May 13. The master of musical computer science and experimental producer’s work as Four Tet paved the way for many current electronic artists – his influence is clearly there in work by acts such as Caribou and Bonobo. … Continue Reading

Classic Album : Young Marble Giants – Colossal Youth

By Hayley Scott

April 02, 2013

Just as the opening ominous swell of primitive, synthetic drum beats hurl ‘Searching for Mr. Right’ deeper into obscurity, you know there’s something eerily perpetual about Colossal Youth. Propulsive guitar rhythms fill unoccupied spaces in short, sharp bursts; resonant bass lines counteract Alison Statton’s saccharine vocal tones, and as ‘The Taxi’ shortly follows, with its ‘80′s RPG-esque synth only slightly revealing its age, it still doesn’t sound out of place today. But its timeless quality is one that pertains to something far more seminal: Colossal Youth is representative of an era under musical restlessness, and it’s just as pertinent now as it was during its initial release in 1980. … Continue Reading

At The Drive-In – Acrobatic Tenement (Reissue)

By David Beech

March 21, 2013

At the Drive-In are more than just a band; they’re a legacy unto themselves.  Over the course of eight years and three albums (nobody said it was a long legacy) they managed to burn so bright,  so intensely that they forever left a scorch mark on the post-hardcore genre that can’t ever be undone. After a distinctly cliché break-up in 2001, members went on to form The Mars Volta and Sparta before their ‘indefinite hiatus’ finally came to an end early last year and now, almost a year after the initial announcements, the reissues we’ve been promised are here, and what better way to begin than with the bands incendiary 1996 début Acrobatic Tenement.

Bardo Pond – Ticket Crystals

By Thomas Bolton

21 March, 2013

In the week My Bloody Valentine resurfaced on stage, waving or drowning in a rip tide of feedback, you might conclude there is something in the air. With a fortuitous timing Bardo Pond have also chosen to re-release their last-but-one album, Ticket Crystals. First out in 2006, it bears certain resemblances to the MBV sound, but influences are a starting point rather than a destination for Bardo Pond. … Continue Reading

Classic Album : The Pogues – Red Roses For Me

February 26, 2013 Classic Album, Reviews No Comments

By Jono Coote

February 26, 2013

When a Pogues album is seen in any ‘best of…’ list of albums, you can almost guarantee that it will be If I Should Fall From Grace With God. However while that is undeniably a seminal album, Red Roses For Me is where it all began; spawning a sub-genre which has paved the way for bands like Flogging Molly and The Tossers to meld Irish folk melodies with the barely controlled rage of the punk sounds which had swept through popular music a couple of years previously. … Continue Reading

Classic Album : Plan B – Ill Manors

February 19, 2013 Classic Album, Reviews No Comments

By Nicko Ruddock

February 19, 2013

These days it is hard to discern exactly what is meant by a ‘classic album’. Usually the term is used to describe an older album that contains material that was considered killer at the time of release and yet, continues to be regarded as such by future generations even when challenged by today’s pitch perfect standard! … Continue Reading

Classic Album : The Sex Pistols – Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols

By Johnny Harris

February 05, 2013

In my opinion Sex Pistols’ fearsome debut Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols is the epitome of the ‘classic’ album. It comes with a clear raised-middle-finger mission statement to all and sundry, not since Elvis shook his provocative hips at screaming teenagers had a generation of
adults been so genuinely petrified of the ‘kids of today’. … Continue Reading
