Mazes – Ores & Minerals

March 6, 2013 Album, News, Reviews No Comments

By Rob Barker

March 06, 2013

In the current mix of biting cold and miserable gloom, it might seem as though summer is a lifetime away. But you would hardly know that from Mazes, who, with their previous output in the form of A Thousand Heys, managed to inject a dose of sunshine into rain-soaked Manchester days. Nearly two years later and it seems as though little has changed in the lives of Conan Roberts (bass), Neil Robinson (drums) and Jack Cooper (guitars / vocals), because Ores and Minerals follows in the sunny footsteps of its predecessor. … Continue Reading

Iceage – You’re Nothing

March 5, 2013 Album, News, Reviews 1 Comment

By Ryan Lake

March 05, 2013

You’re Nothing is the second release from the Danish four-piece, and this self produced marvel continues where New Brigade left off. The Danish youngsters keep up the pace of their previous record and blast through twelve songs in just under half an hour.Blazing from one great song to the next, Iceage barely give themselves time to play a bad note, and after two years of touring seem to have honed their song writing skills. Drawing influence from across the punk and hardcore spectrum, on this record Iceage have managed to craft a performance that is cleaner than previous efforts, yet no less powerful. They are shaping up to be a great band, and You’re Nothing shows that the work they are putting in is paying dividends. … Continue Reading

Caitlin Rose, Dingwall’s, London

March 5, 2013 Gig, News, Reviews 1 Comment

By Russell Warfield

March 05, 2013

With 2010’s gorgeous and largely understated ‘Own Side Now’, there emerges some incongruity between Caitlin Rose’s hard-drinkin-hyper-sassy on-stage presence and the gentle material which she is touring. Gently strumming to vulnerable lyrical sentiments like ‘who’s going to take me home?’ isn’t entirely becoming of her denim-wearing, Stella-glugging, joke-cracking demeanour – in spite of its effortless craft and frequent beauty. … Continue Reading

Bastille – Bad Blood

March 5, 2013 Album, News, Reviews 3 Comments

By David Beech

March 05, 2013

London quartet Bastille have only been a band just under three years. However in that short space of time they’ve managed to notch up a slew of festival appearances, support slots and a number of their tracks have featured on adverts and TV programmes. Not only that, but they’ve managed to release an impressive amount of music as well; a seven inch, two extended plays, two mixtapes and, as of Monday March 4,their début album Bad Blood. … Continue Reading

Single Review : Of Monsters And Men – King And Lionheart

March 4, 2013 News, Reviews, Single 3 Comments

By David Beech

March 04, 2013

Iceland’s Of Monsters and Men are a band who by rights shouldn’t need an introduction. Their début single ‘Little Talks’ is certified platinum in five countries while My Head Is An Animal the album it came from has achieved similar commercial success globally. … Continue Reading

The Joy Formidable, Òran Mór, Glasgow

March 4, 2013 Gig, News, Reviews No Comments

By Joe Watson

March 04, 2013

The Joy Formidable sound is one-size-fits-all. Whether they’re opening arena shows for heavyweights like Muse and The Foo Fighters or headlining their own pub crawl-type tour around UK taverns, the band adapt to their circumstances with ease. The Big Roar set the firm but humble foundations for the Welsh trio, but as they strived to be bigger, so did their sound, which cranked up with the release of Wolf’s Law. … Continue Reading

Book Review : Iain Ellis – Brit Wits : A History Of British Rock Humor

March 4, 2013 Books, News, Reviews 1 Comment

By Rosie Duffield

March 04, 2013

They say you should never judge a book by its cover – and in this case it’s only partly true.  Neon colours (and the Americanised spelling of humour – Ed) instantly attract your eye to Iain Ellis’s Brit Wits: A History of British Rock Humor; styled à la the Sex Pistols it immediately piques your interest and identifies itself as a music-related book worth perusing. … Continue Reading

Single Review : Frank Ocean – Super Rich Kids

March 1, 2013 News, Reviews, Single No Comments

By Richard Wink

March 1, 2013

Winning Best International Male at the Brit Awards introduces Frank Ocean to a wider UK audience. Yet for those late to the party ‘Super Rich Kids’ could be viewed as one of those tail end singles from a brilliant album that doesn’t stand strong on its own (Can anyone remember ‘Until The End of Time’ from FutureSex/LoveSounds or ‘Broken-Hearted Girl’ from I am … Sasha Fierce?). Ocean, proving his talent as a songwriter, and a jaded voice for this frustrated introspective generation is able to find something profound from a superficial world. … Continue Reading

The Weekly Froth!

March 1, 2013 News, Reviews, Single No Comments

By Stef Siepel

March 01, 2013

The Weekly Froth! A weekly take on six tracks, most of which have recently popped up somewhere in the blogosphere. Bit of a mixed bag with a slight leaning towards house, disco, and remixes, but generally just anything that for some reason tickled the writer’s fancy. … Continue Reading
