Listen again to our tip for 2012 on 6Music – Frank Ocean

December 31, 2011 News No Comments

Frank Ocean is very good

Recently, we’ve been spending the dead time between Christmas and New Year working our way through a tin of quality street and catching up on Coronation Street. While we were doing that, however, our tip for 2012 was included in Tom Robinson‘s round-up of 6Music’s listeners’ predictions of who will be big next year in the world of pop music in his Now Playing show. We chose Frank Ocean – he’s undoubtedly already made an impression with his Nostalgia/Ultra mixtape, released for free back in February (and amongst our top 20 albums of this year), but we can’t wait to see what kind of impact he makes with his new material in 2012. Go here to listen again to the show on BBC iplayer and hear Frank Ocean’s ‘Swim Good’ amongst other artists for 2012, like First Aid Kit, Cloud Nothings and Clock Opera. Listen to another Frank Ocean cut, ‘Novacane’, below and read our justification for choosing him. Happy new year! … Continue Reading

The Weeknd - Echoes Of Silence

The Weeknd have already given us plenty of music this year – as well as releasing two mixtapes (House Of Balloons, which was one of our writers’ favourite albums of the year, and Thursday), they also did production work on several tracks of Drake’s sprawling Take Care album. There were hints that another mixtape would come before the year’s out, and it’s here – you can download Echoes Of Silence from their site now. Apparently, it features a cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘Dirty Diana’ and production from the also-very-good Clams Casino. Stream ‘High For This’ from House Of Balloons below. … Continue Reading

Frankie Rose - Interstellar

Frankie Rose has announced the follow up to her 2010 debut album as Frankie Rose And The Outs – she’s dropped ‘The Outs’ and her second album is called Interstellar. It’ll arrive in the UK on Memphis Industries on March 19 2012. From what we’ve heard, Interstellar will see her moving away from the girl-group reverb of her last album to something a little different, a little bigger. Frankie explains, via the medium of a press release, “I always have a big picture in mind. I knew I wanted a HUGE sounding record. Big highs, big lows, and clean. There is no fuzz on this record“. Have a look at the track list for Interstellar below. … Continue Reading
