We’re into the top ten! Is your favourite here? Are you shocked it’s not been placed higher? Are you outraged by some of our writers’ choices? Tell us. Don’t be a closet whiner.

10) Yeah Yeah Yeahs – It’s Blitz! by Rob Hastings

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Its Blitz!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!

It’s been a bumper year for fans of Karen O. Not only can they chirp about her band’s third album being yet another humdinger, but they can also indulge in a debate as to whether her freak-folk soundtrack to Where The Wild Things Are is even better still. Those who plump for It’s Blitz!, however, have plenty of justification. While armies of pretenders continue to squeeze the life out the synth revival, this is an album showing how Korgs really should be used to complement Fenders.

From the moment ‘Zero’ first explodes into full-blown stomping, strobe-lit form, it’s clear Nick Zinner isn’t just lazily following a trend; as the lyric in ‘Heads Will Roll’ goes, the next nine tracks are truly “dripping in alchemy”.

By melding the neon elements of their new sound with their garage origins, YYYs have created an LP that is by turns breathlessly euphoric, profoundly delicate and downright barbaric. … Continue Reading

Our Canadian Blast show is tomorrow!

Musos Guide presents... Canadian Blast

Muso's Guide presents... Canadian Blast

We’re taking over the Queen Of Hoxton in London’s trendy Shoreditch tomorrow night (24 November)!

But a bit of bad news to start with – The Argument And How It Started have had to pull out of the show with illness. We wish wish them better, and hope you join us in that – it’s a real shame they’re not playing too.

Being the relentless oiks you know we are, we didn’t settle at leaving the line-up with three bands and only went and got you guys a super-duper replacement. We’ve replaced The Argument… with quiet ruminative folk darlings The Mighty Low, who’ll now be opening the night and joining an excellent bill containing Redbluegreen, Hey Rosetta! and Spiral Beach. Have a listen to The Mighty Low why don’t you, they sound something a little like Justin Vernon fronting Fleetwood Mac, a.k.a. “GREAT” [c. 2009, us].

We’re as honoured as ever to be working with Canadian Blast on this show – they’ve been doing a fantastic job on showing off Canada’s hottest properties at places like SXSW, CMJ, Popkomm and London Calling over the past few years. … Continue Reading

Muso’s Guide introduces… Magpie Wedding

Magpie Wedding - image by Sonia Piedad Marinangeli

Well, to be honest, they introduce themselves. Like all good folk should!

We’re an indie folk quartet from Bologna who play enough instruments to supply a small orchestra. I sing, play guitar and accordion, and Magpie Wedding is my first ever band. It started in May 2007 with fellow songwriter Paolo (guitars, piano). I’d been writing songs for a few months having failed to find interesting songwriters to play with. My idea was to find folks to sing and play the guitar parts, then go back to playing accordion accompaniments, which was far more fun.

Muso’s Guide Introduces… The Moi Non Plus

The Moi Non Plus

The Moi Non Plus

And here we present to you The Moi Non Plus, a most excellent band that we’ve talked into writing a little piece about themselves. It’s the latest in our simply awesome series which has so far brough you Anya Marina, Camera Club, Youthless, Sugar and Gold, There Will Be Fireworks and so very many more. It’s the kind of A&R that money can’t buy. And here are our latest favourites for you, with a sample mp3 at the bottom…

We are The Moi Non Plus, we are a drum guitar & sample duo from Amsterdam. Besides playing in the band we run Subbacultcha!; an aternative music platform from Amsterdam. We promote shows, run a label a website and a magazine. We also organise showcases for Dutch bands abroad and we do occasional art projects.

October and November are crazy months for both the bands as well as the platform.

Muse – The Resistance

Muse

Muse

Here at Muso’s Guide, we like to review releases collaboratively from time to time. And the time has arisen once more; we locked three of our writers in a room with their headphones [Ed - stop lying!][Ed - I'm not][Ed - you are](etc) and you, the lucky reader, can now read what they made of Muse’s latest magnum opus. And yes, that was meant to be contradictory.

Peter Harris‘ take: Matt Bellamy is like that kid that we all used to know from our schooldays; the really clever kid that got straight As but used to think that WWF wrestling was real. Bellamy’s still on the faux conspiracy path, this time apparently taking inspiration from the love story of George Orwell’s 1984. But there’s such a lack of depth and conviction to the lyrical themes, he might as well be talking about Bourbon biscuits.

The Whispertown 2000 interview Alessi’s Ark!

September 2, 2009 Features, Interviews 1 Comment
Alessis Ark

Alessi's Ark

Yesterday, you may have read magical folkstress Alessi’s Ark interviewing the person-form equivalent of musical ESG, The Whispertown 2000. If you missed it, read it right here.

But that wasn’t all… they then swapped roles!!! The Whispertown 2000′s Morgan interviews Alessi right here in yet another one-off ultra-mega-special exclusive from Muso’s Towers. Oh yes.

Morgan: If you could play drums in any band, what band would you choose?

AA: Oh i’d be a happy bird if we could be in a band together! There are mountains and water between us, but it’d be fun to try! Heartless Bastards would be the other band i think, Erika’s voice is so powerful and they’ve got good, solid beats!

How old were you when you starting writing music?

AA: When i was about 14 i started writing poems and stories for my zine Brain Bulletin. It was around then that i tried putting some of the poems to chords on the guitar and the midi keyboard we had at home.

Do you like pizza?

AA: I like pizza! A lot!

What do you like to order on your pizza?

AA: Hmm, i do eat animals but i prefer non-animal options on pizza; mushrooms, artichoke hearts, olives, goat’s cheese… yes!

We’ve noticed you are very crafty. What is the last thing that you’ve made?

AA: Nothing too fancy of late but i did just finish making Nana’s birthday card.

Why are things so magical?

AA: There are good people around.

What are your favourite McCarthy Trenching and Neva Dinova songs and why? And who would you rather arm wrestle, Jake Bellows or Dan McCarthy?

AA: Oooh this is a tough one! My favourite McCarthy Trenching songs are ‘Detritus’, ‘I’m Not Long For This World’ and ‘Hotel Lobby Bar’. Dan’s voice is so clear and true.

Hmm and Neva… I don’t think Jake’s got a bad song up his sleeves – every one of them gives me goosebumps. ‘A man and his dream’ stops me in my tracks everytime. ‘Dragon’ is a special one too and I love the use of the word “elastic” in ‘Dances Fantastic’.

In arm wrestle… could I take the two fellows on at once?! I wouldn’t stand a chance but it would be fun!!

We enjoy your songs so much, both when you play alone, and with a band. Do you prefer playing with a band or by yourself?

AA: Oh thanks! It’s was a special thing sharing ideas and distributing all those feelings and sounds across more bodies than my own but since making the album I’ve found it hard to find the folks to play with. Omaha was almost too beautiful a starting place – likeminded players are out there though – I believe it! Some must just be hiding!

What are your top 3 inspirations?

AA: Listening to stories and trying to remember details in dreams from the night before. Honest people too.

If you weren’t playing music, what would you do?

AA: Drawing and children are two favourites  – maybe I’d be making children’s books.

When is your next show? Can we come?!!

AA: Yes! Please do! Hike or swim! I’m playing a few songs at Pestival on Friday, September 4th with Robyn Hitchcock at Queen Elizabeth Hall. It’ll be a night of songs inspired by insects!

You’re lovely and this is fun! See you sooooon xo

Wasn’t that lovely? Now go and put on a cardigan, raid the larder for flumps and sit by the fireplace with a cup of cocoa for the rest of the day…
