Alan Pownall
Having already made a name for himself with his unique takes on pop hits from the likes of Kanye West and Beyonce, it is now with bated breath that we can hear ‘Clara’, an engaging track that contains Alan Pownall’s signature enigmatic quality. He is presently working on his debut album, which has a current release date of early 2010, ‘Clara’ being the first track released from the album.
Pastels/Tenniscoats
This September be prepared to be lulled into the dreamy creation that is the collaboration between The Pastels and The Tenniscoats. Two Sunsets is the brand new and exciting release from the two bands and includes an outstanding array of 12 songs. You may remember The Pastels as the Scottish pop legends that were the cult band of the eighties. The Tenniscoats, who you might be less familiar with, are a Japanese duo who recorded this collection in Glasgow whilst completing their UK tour.
Richmond Fontaine
It’s pouring with rain and the hope of a glorious sunny summer is rapidly slipping through our fingers. But then the sweet sound of Richmond Fontaine‘s eighth album falls upon my ears and all is good again.
Paper Route - Absence
Paper Route - no not that tedious first job you had, but the American indie band from Nashville, Tennessee, has finally unleashed their debut album upon the world. Dubbed as ingenious, electronica-based rock, Paper Route’s first album showcases their intense, intimate lyrics with a blend of synths, guitars and midi’s. Their first full-length album Absence has a track listing of entirely new songs, which get off to a promising start with the opening track ‘Enemy Among Us’. There is an eclectic feel to the majority of the songs with promising overtones of something a little stronger.
Disappointingly however the ‘something stronger’ fails to make an appearance as we meander our way through the various tracks. The ordering of which is somewhat unsatisfying, consistently leaving us wanting more. With an enchantingly mellow start, the album soon disperses into more buoyant tracks, encouraging the listener to stick with them, but no sooner has it taken a turn for the optimistic than it reverts rapidly back to more melancholy tones. Franz Ferdinand formed in 2001 in Glasgow and consists of lead vocalist Alex Kapranos, guitarist Nicholas McCarthy, drummer Paul Thomas and bass player Robert (Bob) Hardy.
Named after their father and grandfather, Kings of Leon consist of brothers Caleb, Nathan and Jared Fallowill and their cousin, Matthew. Born and raised in Memphis, these country boys played on the ‘new bands’ stage at Glastonbury 2003 prior to releasing their debut album, Youth And Young Manhood, in July of that year.
The Zutons are a group containing five unique individuals. Abi Harding, the only female amongst the group, provides saxophone sounds whilst David McCabe creates the vocal vibes. The rest of the members include Boyan Chowdhury on lead guitar, Sean Payne on drums and Russell Pritchard on bass.
The Killers originally formed in 2002Â when Brandon Flowers was dumped by the group he was previously in, Blush Response, after blankly refusing to move to LA with the rest of the band.
Flowers’ current group consists of Dave Kenning on guitars, Mark Stoermer on bass, Ronnie Vannucci on drums and Brandon himself on keyboard and vocals. Ronnie was working as a photographer and Mark as a medical courier when the group formed.
The band finally gained the exposure they needed when they reached the attention of Lizard King, an independent, London-based record label and a special edition of ‘Mr Brightside’ was released in the autumn of 2003.
The Killers have made several fab singles including ‘Somebody Told Me’ and ‘Mr Brightside’, and have recently released their debut album Hot Fuss which features previously unreleased material such as ‘Andy You’re A Star’ and ‘Midnight Show’.
The group has tour dates lined up from now up until March of ’05, so will be busy occupying groups of enthusiastic ears alongside timid music taste-buds. We are well overdue the vibrant burst into the hip music scene that is The Killers.
